Wayne County Middle School
Monticello, Kentucky
This new middle school is nestled into the heart of an academic campus. New pedestrian paths allow students and staff to easily access the adjacent high school and elementary school successfully connecting the individual parts of this campus into a cohesive unit. The location of the middle school also takes into consideration current and future athletic play and practice fields. In addition, an open unobstructed space at the rear of the building exists for a future auditorium.
On the interior, colorful floor finishes jigsaw through the building creating a lively, refreshing environment. All of the classrooms, administration area and major program spaces are organized around a two story “commons area” where a large skylight in the middle of the roof accentuates the space with an abundance of daylight. The large, curvilinear steps can serve as seating and allow the “commons area” to be used as an instructional space. This space is the intersection of all student traffic and allows gathering and interaction to take place, stimulating a sense of community for the students.
