Casey County Walnut Hill Elementary
Liberty, Kentucky

This new elementary is built adjacent to a rural highway and combines the student bodies from three existing elementary schools. While the project includes standard programmatic spaces for an elementary school, thoughtful consideration was given to the layout of those spaces and the interaction between site and building. A green house exists adjacent to the science classroom. A shared stage spans the gymnasium and cafeteria allowing these spaces to completely open up to one another. Courtyards take advantage of the rural surroundings allowing instruction to occur both inside and out. The administrative suite has interior and exterior views for security. And, the media center positioned at the front of the building gives the facility a strong public presence.
The sky-lit central commons area creates a shared space for the entire community. Site development, landscaping and the formal organization of the building symbolically represents the coming together of three schools.
