Wayne County Bell Elementary
Gymnasium Addition
Monticello, Kentucky
The district was in need of additional interior athletic facilities for their K-6 population in order to integrate physical activities into their district curriculum. This gym addition gives the school more interior play and exercise space while improving the exterior campus space.
Th e gymnasium, while a typical elementary school size, is configured for many different types of activities from basketball and four square to climbing on a traverse wall. The gymnasium volume is taller than the other existing building edges and because of its scale it creates an anchor to the south side of the school campus. On both sides of the volume it is flanked by porches that give cover to the children from the rain/snow and provides the school enough area for gathering the children for entering or existing the play area. At the same time these porches provide an appropriate sense of scale for the neighboring street and play spaces. Other program elements include toilets rooms and a family resource room. Alternate construction items include tennis courts and new blacktop for the parking areas.
