Bell Residence
Lexington, Kentucky
The original residence was constructed circa 1815 with a detached kitchen. It was built in the colonial revival style, with solid masonry construction. Around 1850, the owner built additional rooms that infilled between the two existing structures. The residence is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, as well as discussed in several books by Rexford Newcomb entitled, “ Old Kentucky Architecture: Colonial, Federal, Greek Revival, Gothic and Other Types Erected Prior To The War Between the States” and “Architecture in Old Kentucky”.
Over the years, more additions were added that contributed to structural instability of the original residence. In 2008, the owner wanted to renovate the residence into a facility they could utilize on the farm while maintaining the historical character of the structure. In early spring of 2008, the existing additions were removed and the structure was stripped down to the original 1850’s residence. The new additions were strategically placed in order to maintain the existing form and create a division between new and existing that was still sympathetic to the original residence.
